June is my favourite month; it always leaves me older and wiser. However, this year's June is about one thing and one thing only: The FIFA World Cup (or maybe it just seems that way when you work in men's magazines publishing). Nevertheless, notice the added World Cup theme to this month's newsletter.

Featured photographer
This month's featured photographer is Rudy De Doncker. Chances are you are quite familiar with his work, even though you might not be aware if it. De Doncker's has established himself as a well respected and praised photographer, with many of his photos being used, printed and published (Among them Doro, Agent Steel and Lacuna Coil). He was kind enoug to share some pictures with us for this month's newsletter. Check out his website for his portfolio.

Now let's get on with the newsletter:

When you think of Brazil, a few things immediately come to mind: supermodels, bikini waxes and football. I imagine it must be nice to be Brazilian whenever there is a World Cup... Max from Krisiun confirms:

  1. To start with the number 1 question: Who do you think will win the World Cup?
    Brasil, of course
  2. And seriously, who do you think has the best chances?
Besides Brasil, Germany, Argentina and England.
  3. So are you a serious football fan, do you follow the national competition or are you just interested because it's the World Cup?
No, we are very interested on the national championship, actually our team, called Internacional, is on the second position right now, might be champion this year.
  4. Who is your favorite team and your all-time favorite player?
    Team - Internacional Player- Pelé
  5. Back to the World Cup, how big of an advantage do you think Germany will have, being on home ground?
They will have all the supporters cheering and pushing them forward, but seriously, Germany is a very strong team, any chance they have in front of the goal they will kick hard and well, very ofensive, they are definitelly one of the best teams on this cup, my guess for the the final is Brasil x Germany
  6. Predict the outcome of the final game, teams and scores, and how much money would you stake on that?
    Brasil 03 x Germany 01 U$ 1.000,00 (just to pay the Bar's check.)
  7. How metal is football?
Footbal is more samba than metal

ARCH ENEMY

If you are attending the European summer festivals this year, it will be almost impossible to miss the mighty Arch Enemy. After Sweden Rock, Graspop, Hellfest and Download in June, there's still Tuska Metal Festival, With Full Force, Arvika Festivalen, The Earthshaker Fest, MetalWay Festival and Metalcamp Festival to look forward to next month. Michael shares his impressions of the first festivals so far:

Michael Amott: SWEDEN ROCK and DOWNLOAD!

"Hail ARCH ENEMY fans!

Just want to drop a few lines and thank everyone who came out and had fun with ARCH ENEMY last weekend at the SWEDEN ROCK and DOWNLOAD festivals (UK). And what a weekend it was!

After our show at SWEDEN ROCK, which went surprisingly well with only a few technical problems (standard procedure at festivals...), we had to pack our gear together quickly and race down the highway to Copenhagen Airport for an evening flight to the UK… We were due to play the Download festival in the early afternoon the next day… As we left the festival area I could hear parts of the METAL CHURCH set – sounded really killer, old-school metal… I wish I’d had the time to hang out.

The ARCH ENEMY show at DOWNLOAD also went well, although much shorter than what we normally play at festivals - only 30 minutes, we made a big impact. They told us that we had 40,000 people in the audience when we played - that’s the biggest show we’ve ever played!

The total capacity at DOWNLOAD was 65,000 and it was sold-out, I watched the METALLICA set from the side of the stage and they opened up with “Creeping Death” – Gotta love that…

We hung out with friends (seemed like I knew everyone there) and did a signing session at the KERRANG! tent (amazing) and few of us even stayed on for the Metal Hammer awards in London on the Monday. After that we were pretty wrecked and have spent the last few days picking up the pieces.

Basically, we enjoyed perfect summer weather and strong shows at both performances – a good start to our European festival summer!

Next up, is HELLFEST (France) and GRASPOP (Belgium) We are headlining the 2nd stage at both these festivals and we are prepared to blow these up – be there or be, well…not metal"

Now if you are thinking, lucky Europeans and their summer festivals (it's funny because it's true), you can always head over to Tokyo to catch the band at the LOUD PARK ’06 festival where they will be playing alongside Megadeth, Ministry, In Flames and Slayer.

Arch Enemy will once again return to Japan, this time for a performance at the LOUD PARK ’06 festival in Tokyo. Other bands appearing at the festival include Slayer, Megadeth, Ministry, In Flames and many more.

Arch Enemy most recently visited Japan for 6 shows on their successful ‘Doomsday Machine” tour in October 2005.

Michael Amott comments: “We always have the most amazing time playing for our Japanese fans – this time will be no different… See you there!”

Oct. 14 - Tokyo, JPN @ Makuhari Messe International Exhibition Halls 9-11 Loud Park Festival

As for the World Cup, Angela shows her patriotism when it comes to Germany's Mannschaften:

© Rudy De Doncker

  1. To start with the number 1 question: Who do you think will win the World Cup?
    GERMANY OF COURSE!
  2. And seriously, who do you think has the best chances?
    GERMANY, HOLLAND, ENGLAND, SWEDEN
  3. So are you a serious football fan, do you follow the national competition or are you just interested because it's the World Cup?
I AM A SERIOUS METAL FAN, THATS ABOUT IT.
  4. Who is your favorite team and your all-time favorite player?
MY FAVE TEAM IS SLAYER AND MY ALL TIME FAVE PLAYER IS KERRY KING. AT LEAST IF THEY WOULD BE A FOOTBALL TEAM.
  5. Back to the World Cup, how big of an advantage do you think Germany will have, being on home ground?
WHATEVER ADVANTAGES THEY MIGHT HAVE, THEY ARE GONNA BLOW THEM BY LAZY PLAYING - AS USUAL.
  6. Predict the outcome of the final game, teams and scores, and how much money would you stake on that?
ITS URUGAY AGAINST IRAN, AND IRAN WILL WIN BY KIDNAPPING THE OTHER TEAM. I WOULD BET ALL THE MONEY ON IT I GOT IN MY POCKET RIGHT NOW: 10 SWEDISH KRONOR.
  7. How metal is football?
FOOTBALL IS (C)RAP. ITS THE BEERDRINKERS AND COACH-POTATOES CHOICE OF SPORT. AND THEY ALL WOULD HAVE PLAYED BETTER IF THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN THERE, HAHA..

CANNIBAL CORPSE

According to Alex, it's been a slow month in the Cannibal Corpse camp. Sure, their classis cult masterpiece 'The Bleeding' got re-released but other than that, nothing major has been happening.

We are reissuing our 1994 album "The Bleeding". The new version is remastered, and it includes the video for "Staring Through the Eyes of the Dead" and our cover of Possessed's song "The Exorcist" as bonus features. The CD will be released as an eight-page digipack with completely new art. Lyrics will also be included.

"The Bleeding" reissue track listing:

  1. Staring Through The Eyes Of The Dead
  2. Fucked With A Knife
  3. Stripped, Raped And Strangled
  4. Pulverized
  5. Return To Flesh
  6. The Pick-Axe Murders
  7. She Was Asking For It
  8. The Bleeding
  9. Force Fed Broken Glass
  10. An Experiment In Homicide
  11. The Exorcist (POSSESSED cover)
  12. Staring Through The Eyes Of The Dead (video clip)

So, they did also travel to Los Angeles on Wednesday the 21st to film the second video for KILL, "Death Walking Terror". The video once again got directed by Dan Dobi, who has previously worked with the band on the "Make Them Suffer" video.

In between, Paul and George made an appearance on MTV's Headbanger's Ball, where they discussed KILL, Sounds of the Underground and Rob's return. In case you missed it or in case you don't get MTV, watch it on MTV Overdrive

EXODUS

"Walk a mile in my shoes, walk a mile in my shoes
And before you abuse, criticize and accuse
Walk a mile in my shoes"

© Rudy De Doncker

Upset because Exodus cancelled their show on their last European tour? Upset because they got stuck in London, upset that they made you come to the Zurich show twice?

Hello……..I am Joey Severance and I was the Tour Manager for Exodus on their last European Tour. Normally I don't like to write these kinds of things but after reading so many people talk shit about my boys I felt that if nothing else, I should just take the time to write back these no life having, shit talking motherfuckers and say FUCK YOU!

Quite simply, Exodus should be praised for the bullshit they/we went through on this tour. And let me be the first to tell you that almost NONE was through fault of their own. From the moment they arrived in Europe they went almost from the airplane to the stage. To give you an idea of what it was like, I will run it down for you.

Exodus arrived to Europe after a fiasco in the US with the airline there. Upon arrival they played a kick ass show in Hengelo. After the show we drive to Koln Germany where the band, myself, Thilo (soundman) and Simon (Guitar Tech/Stage Manager) were dropped off at the airport at 5am for a trip to Portugal. We arrive there and wait an hour and a half to be picked up. From there we are driven to a hotel where we check in and then immediately go out to dinner with the local promoter. After dinner we head straight to the venue for sound check and prepare for the show. By the time the show is over its after 4am when we arrive back at the hotel only to be picked up at 5am to be driven to the airport again to head to Spain. We were right back were we started less than 24 hours ago.

Once we arrive in Spain things started to look good since we could get some sleep this night after the show since our flight out the next day wasn't until after 11am……or so we thought………anyway, we get picked up, drive an hour to the hotel where the band and Simon check into their rooms and I leave with the backline and go straight to the festival site. While I'm rockin out to Hanoi Rocks, Nina, the girl who is handling Hotel and Transportation for the bands comes over to inform me that our bus will be leaving to take us to the airport at 4am. Why? Because the airport we were flying OUT of was 4 hours away! Needless to say, that knocked the life out of me as I was looking forward to some serious sleep that night!!

When the band arrived at the festival site, I gave them the bad news and still they got on the stage and DESTROYED just about everyone (we all agreed that Whitesnake was the band of the festival) now…..keep in mind what I just told you that this band went through. We fly out of Spain to London when our final destination is really Zurich (yeah, what a fuck up right?). We missed the flight to Zurich and I had to buy us all new tickets to get us to France. We arrive in France at 9:10pm and didn't get picked up by the bus until after 6:30am. We spend over 9 hours waiting!! The airport even kicked us out and closed down for the night (Hey France, we've been kicked out of better airports than this!!) For the first time in 3 days I was able to lay down and stretch out my body when they kicked us out because I passed out on the grass. Needless to say we missed the show in Zurich. Exodus felt very bad about this and even tried to come back on that following Friday to play a FREE show for the folks that took the 2 days out of their lives to spend with Exodus only to find them not show up. Trust me; we did everything in our power to make this show happen. In conclusion, Exodus, despite the HELL they went through to get to these shows, the ones they did play, they gave more than 100%. These guys were broken like dogs and still they killed. So again, for all you shit talkers that THINK you know what its like to go on tour, F U C K Y O U!

© Rudy De Doncker

With all the sleeping in airports, Paul only had time to answer one question:

  1. Predict the outcome of the final game, teams and scores, and how much money would you stake on that?
USA vs Brasil. The score will be 10-0 and I would put € 100.00 on it (I am in denial).

NAPALM DEATH

September 18, 2006. Mark it down because that is the date Napalm Death's latest 'Smear Campaign' will be released. We know you are counting down the hours and the days for this one, so check out this little studio teaser the band recorded while in Wales: http://www.napalmdeath.org/mediaplayer/videos.php?id=13
produced by Mitch Harris for www.napalmdeath.org

Some definite song titles we can already reveal are:

  1. Rabid Wolves (For Christ)
  2. In Deference
  3. Atheist Runt
  4. When All Is Said and Done
  5. Sink Fast, Let Go
  6. Shattered Existence
  7. Fatalist
  8. Call That An Option?

In case you missed the last newsflash, here is Barney's lenghty update once more:

Update from the studio

Hello everyone. As you may have heard, we are back in Wales at Foel recording the next Napalm album (this place is fast becoming our favourite place to record!) Really, this thing is sounding absolutely immense. If you liked 'Code...', you'll really love this one, i think. We absolutely busted our arses to get everything ready, and the rest of the band really pulled out the stops to make some great, grinding music, with Russ Russell working wonders once again to produce that ND 'wall of sound'. I also have to mention Chris Fielding, the in-house engineer, who has also made a great contribution to the proceedings.

I can give you some more titles right now (everything, including the ones you had before, are definite): 'Rabid Wolves (For Christ)', 'In Deference', 'Atheist Runt', 'When All Is Said and Done', 'Sink Fast, Let Go', and tons more. The lyrical debate is perhaps for later but, generally speaking, the album is (hopefully) a deep critique of religion and religious governance / restrictions from an atheist perspective. All jolly stuff, then. And the music: still fast and furious, raging riffs and a couple more Swans-style tracks this time (like 'Morale'), only progressed a bit more with even more atmosphere and a more rounded melodic vocal performance (if I may say so myself)

Anneke from Dutch band The Gathering has offered up a few parts to a track, which I've yet to hear. But before some people recoil in horror about Napalm going operatic rock or whatever, this was done for good effect and relevance to the track. It will work. It will rock. I'm sure. And we're grateful to Anneke (who is a an awesome vocalist in her own right) in advance for giving it a stab.

Studio events: Russ threw up in Chris Fiedling's car after a night on the sauce, Dave the studio owner decided to shovel the sewage out of the septic tank right in the middle of a vocal session (barf!) and, on a more serious note, I ran over a badger on the single-track road around here. Nothing I could do to avoid him, but mortified nevertheless.

Oh, and Jeff Walker ex-Carcass turned up in his capacity as master-ligger. We didn't let him sing this time though, and just poked fun at him really. Ok, onwards and upwards. Peace and that.

BARNEY ND

Napalm Death also participated in the football survey. Shane and Barney share their insightful visions with us:

Shane:
  1. To start with the number 1 question: Who do you think will win the World Cup?
I reckon Argentina though i would be chuffed (happy) if an unexpected team were to win
  2. And seriously, who do you think has the best chances?
    Brazil, Argentina, Germany
  3. So are you a serious football fan, do you follow the national competition or are you just interested because it's the World Cup?
used to like ti when i ws younger i was a huge Liverpool suporter,But now only really get into it when the world cup and euro cup happens - Its an excuse to drink a couple of beers and neglect the usal daily chores ! But i do get carried away with it like everyone else
  4. Who is your favorite team and your all-time favorite player?
I guess I would have to say Liverpool and my favourite player of all time was Ian Rush(showing my age there i guess)
  5. Back to the World Cup, how big of an advantage do you think Germany will have, being on home ground?
Quite a lot,Being on home ground and having the enthusiasm of the supporters should give germany the incentive to go the extra mile, and even though statistically they are not the strongest team,as they go further their confidence will grow.
  6. Predict the outcome of the final game, teams and scores, and how much money would you stake on that?
Argentina 3 germany 2,I would stake my S.O.B "Leave me Alone" 7" ep worth quite a bit to the die hards - but hey i have two copies !!!! not much of a betting man
  7. How metal is football?
its not its pigs skin - I wonder what vegetarians think about that ?

Barney:
  1. To start with the number 1 question: Who do you think will win the World Cup?
I think Argentina. I think they've looked by far the best team in their play so far - far better than Brazil even.
  2. And seriously, who do you think has the best chances?
If you're trying to suggest that I might be thinking that England will win, I'm not at all. They made hard work of both the Paraguay and Trinidad games, and I think better teams than those will tear England apart. The press over here thought England had the World cup won before the team stepped on the plane - as always. Hey, why let reality get in the way of hype?
  3. So are you a serious football fan, do you follow the national competition or are you just interested because it's the World Cup?
Well, I follow the England team but, as everyone knows, I could give a shit about the patriotic side of things. 'Rule Britannia' and all that stuff...pretty stupid to me. I care more about Aston Villa, my local team. But enough to literally fight with someone over it? Nope.
  4. Who is your favorite team and your all-time favorite player?
Aston Villa is my team - I was born in the area and currently live about a mile-and-a-half from the stadium. My favourite all-time player(s) are Tony Daley and Gary shaw (who played in the 1982 European Cup-winning team). Both local guys from around these parts also. Both great players who gave their all for the team.
  5. Back to the World Cup, how big of an advantage do you think Germany will have, being on home ground?
The support will be amazing, I'm sure, but I always think it's ultimately down to the mental strength of the players on the pitch. Some of the best players, I believe, like to block out the crowd to give them maximum concentration.
  6. Predict the outcome of the final game, teams and scores, and how much money would you stake on that?
Well, I already have a small (£3) wager on Argentina (clever me, eh?). I would say Argentina v. Brazil in the final. Final score: Argentina: 2 Brazil: 1.
  7. How metal is football?
Only metal is metal, and very nice it is too. Life has many different aspects and pleasures. Even if it isn't metal, who the fuck cares? Do I sound like a philosopher or what?

SOILWORK

Don't ever let me hear you say Soilwork aren't touring enough. How can they not, when the rest of the year has already been booked solid with festivals, a European tour and another US tour?
Good question. If you have any more questions (but maybe better ones), you can send them in through this special FAQ form.

Gitarrist sökes!

Hej!

As for the World Cup, Sven was man enough to answer the trivia:

  1. To start with the number 1 question: Who do you think will win the World Cup?
Well I'm hoping for Sweden of course but it will probably be either Brazil Argentina or Germany
  2. And seriously, who do you think has the best chances?
I'd say Germany has a good chance, they have a good team and the advantage of playing on German soil.
  3. So are you a serious football fan, do you follow the national competition or are you just interested because it's the World Cup?
I guess I'm more of a World Cup fan than a football fan.
  4. Who is your favorite team and your all-time favorite player?
I really don't know but i liked the French team with Zinedine Zidane in the World Cup of 98 and also the Swedish team of 94 when they won the bronze in USA.
  5. Back to the World Cup, how big of an advantage do you think Germany will have, being on home ground?
If you look at previous World Cups its usually an important factor and I'm sure it will be this time as well.
  6. Predict the outcome of the final game, teams and scores, and how much money would you stake on that?
Tough question but I'm guessing Germany, Argentina 2-1. But i wouldn't bet any money an that..
  7. How metal is football?
Well id rather watch a good band than a football game, so i guess not enough.

FUELBLOODED

Catch Fuelblooded in this month's Aardschok (NL) and Terrorizer (UK).

As for the Dutch being the proud football nation that we are...Michiel shares his take on the World Cup:

  1. To start with the number 1 question: Who do you think will win the World Cup?
Well, of course Holland will win! What do you think?
  2. And seriously, who do you think has the best chances?
OK, seriously: I think Germany has the best chances to win the cup. Four years ago they had the worst team ever, and they still managed to get to the finals! So this time, with the home advantage and all, I guess they are the time to beat.
  3. So are you a serious football fan, do you follow the national competition or are you just interested because it's the World Cup?
I used to be a big football fan. Not so much anymore, but I still know a lot of what goes on in the league in Holland as well as in other European countries. Football wise, that is.
  4. Who is your favorite team and your all-time favorite player?
My favorite team as in favorite country? I guess I'm rooting for Holland then... My favorite clubteam, however, is Feyenoord. I don't know why, cause they suck, but they still are my favorite team. A lot of frustration and sleepless nights is what that causes me. Well, it used to be like that. I try to focus on my music more when they loose :-)
  5. Back to the World Cup, who has the easiest pool? It's got to be France!
    I think it's Germany actually.
  6. Predict the outcome of the final game, teams and scores, and how much money would you stake on that?
OK, the final will be Germany - Brasil. Germans take it 3-2. What a bummer. Maybe the Dutch can beat the Germans in the quarter finals though.... Fingers crossed!
  7. How metal is football?
I think football and metal have something in common, energy-wise. But icehockey is definitely much more metal than football. Well, maybe there's a different best-fitting sport for the different kinds of metal. Heavy metal is football, while death metal is wrestling and thrash metal is icehockey. But which sport fits black metal?

HYPOCRISY

HYPOCRISY PREACH THE ART OF WAR!
When your goal is a calculated sonic assault upon every major city in the U.S. and Canada, there are few stategists who can ensure victory in battle.

Armed with the reputation of their punishing live shows, an album that ranked in as one of the Top Albums of 2005, and the wisdom of a fifteen-year career, it's no surprise that HYPOCRISY's tried-and-true methodology for devastation has been drafted for the upcoming Machines At War tour with L.A.'s Fear Factory, New York's Suffocation, and Poland's Decapitated - set to launch in San Francisco this October 26th.

Hailing from Sweden and praised by Guitar One Magazine for "cramming maximum hurt into each track" on their latest release, Virus, The Machines At War North American tour is more significant to singer/songwriter/guitarist/producer Peter Tägtgren than most can imagine.

"Fear Factory are close to our hearts," reveals Tägtgren from his small village home. "Soul Of A New Machine was the influence for me to start my other project, Pain. What people don't realize is that the first tour HYPOCRISY ever did back in 1993 was with them and Cannibal Corpse in Europe. They've really done a lot for us to make this tour possible, so yeah, we're looking forward to giving everything we've got while we're up on stage. It doesn't matter if there are 50, 200, or 500 people in the audience. We're ready to give everything every night."

With four savage bands, forty fated shows, and thirty-nine doomed cities, ground zero will soon be arriving at your backdoor. "When doing battle," cited Sun-tzu centuries ago in his book The Art Of War, "seek a quick victory." The conquests that await HYPOCRISY in the mosh pits will be stained with just enough blood to ensure that their mission to annihilate is complete.

As for the final word on the World Cup, I guess the honour goes to Unleashed's Anders:

  1. To start with the number 1 question: Who do you think will win the World Cup?
judging from question #2 this seems to be where i say who i WISH to win huh? so, sweden of course!
  2. And seriously, who do you think has the best chances?
so yeah since we know the sweden thing won't happen....well it is still a hard question. everyone's saying brazil or germany, but i'd say argentina might have a shot. and i'll put holland in there as underdogs too.
  3. So are you a serious football fan, do you follow the national competition or are you just interested because it's the World Cup?
serious, of course! i follow the national team at all times and even more so my own home team.
  4. Who is your favorite team and your all-time favorite player?
the forementioned home team...HAMMARBY IF! but as far as an all time favorite player, it's dennis bergkamp all the way.
  5. Back to the World Cup, how big of an advantage do you think Germany will have, being on home ground?
not sure. seems so many people travel from other countries that it's like a home game for other teams as well. in the sweden-paraguay game for instance, there were 40 000 swedes...
  6. And who has the easiest pool? It's got to be France!
perhaps...but france on the other hand have not been very impressive yet. germany has a pretty easy pool too, on paper at least.
  7. Predict the outcome of the final game, teams and scores, and how much money would you stake on that?
hell, who knows...but i'd want to see a final between brazil - holland ending 2-3. but i will not bet one cent on it hahaha!
  8. How metal is football?
very! most of the guys here, in the stockholm scene at least, regularly go to games and so on. mob mentality and beer...metal for sure!

This month I have an extra special treat. Erin wishes to leave you with these words of wisdom:

Festival season
Drink plenty of alcohol
But drink water too

Until next month,
